Magical mushrooms! I’ve trawled through the depths of the public domain to bring you this stellar selection of vintage mushroom illustrations. Mycology – the study of fungus – had a big moment in the 19th and 20th centuries. Interestingly, much of the scientific illustration of mushrooms and fungus was done by women due to it falling under the umbrella of botanical illustration.

Due to the societal conventions at the time the female artists involved tended to not be well known publicly. Recently though, there’s been an enthusiasm for unearthing these unsung illustrative heroes without which we wouldn’t have such rich, beautiful records.
