Love dogs? Me too! I came across a 19th-century book packed with canine images illustrated by John Gerrard Keulemans. This post features 14 color illustrations from Dogs, jackals, wolves, and foxes: a monograph of the Canidae, published in 1890. You can find the book in its entirety for free online.

What Are Canines?

Canines aren’t just your family dog. The Canidae family also represents wild dogs, coyotes, jackals, dingoes, wolves, and foxes. It’s generally divided into three phylogenetic groups: wolf-like canids, fox-like canids, and South American canids. However, a single species like the raccoon dog, for example, falls into its own category, also known as a monotypic taxon.
